Making the arches in The Riverside Jig. Longways set, two lines of dancers with couples facing each other. This was at the TryItOut on November 30 2025 at Greythorn Community Hub.
Always wanted to have dance as a hobby but couldn’t find the right kind?
Scottish Country Dance is for normal people, not athletes.
At SCDVic we want to give lots of people the chance to try it.
And lots love it and want to keep dancing, so there are beginner’s courses and regular weeknight groups.
It’s a community style of dance, from weddings and ceilidhs to the grand balls on Scotland’s aristocratic estates.
All you need is soft soled shoes and comfy clothes.
No partner required, we dance in sets.
Sets are usually three or four couples, in two lines facing each other. The dancers facing each other are a couple and we pair up before each dance. The gender pairings are flexible these days. The old days of strict male and female lines are gone!
There are fast dances, the jig and reels, and the slow form, the strathspey, where we get a welcome rest. Both contribute beautifully to fitness and balance, and have all sorts of fabulous health benefits. We have to learn lot of new things so both brain and body get a workout.
Dancers are strictly structured with formations/figures like reels and turns, some easy, some complex. Usually four figures make a repeat and each couple gets a chance at dancing first couple with the main role.
Have a look for our next TryItOut and also on the rscdsmelbourne site for other options.
New Dancers are always very welcome- ring or email a group if you would like to go along and there are intro events clustered at the start of the dancing year.
See you on the dance floor in 2026!
